Centaur - Half horse, half bodybuilder

We were asked to provide the motion capture & animation for a number of Centaur creatures that were to form the main characters in a feature film production of Narnia.

Using a Vicon system, we captured walk, trot, and canter motions (plus all transitions) of horses on a tread mill and bucking & kicking stunts performed in a 15 meter a circus ring.

The human torso movement was provided by a bodybuilder who performed to a real time playback of the horse data. Our major concern was whether the human part should drive the horses motions, the other way round, or a combination of the two.

We consulted on the design and implementation of mapping the horse motion capture data to a custom built flight platform simulator providing the animatronic close-up shots. We modified the data, and added additional mapping to allow the simulator to be controlled by a joystick which blended all the motions of the real creature into a single one handed user interface.

The motion capture data has recently been "digitally re-mastered" and is being sold here.

Horse Component:

Tread mill & horses were supplied by Langford Equine Medical Research Centre. The data was also supplied to them to supplement their Biomechanical Research, and as such all skeletal bones were named with their correct Latin Medical Names!

A careful study of the horse's anatomy was carried out before shooting to ensure that marker positioning was accurate and meaningful. Circus horses were supplied by an animal trainer. Data was recorded with a 6 camera Vicon 370 System using flat discs and specially made latex soft markers (quite crude compared to today's standards).

The head data was not captured since it was always intended to replace the horse's head with a human torso. Data quality was not ideal due to the size of the capture volume (esp: for 6 cameras), a 15m diameter circus ring, and also since the animal trainer was standing about one foot away from the kicking fore-legs of the horses. stunt 1
